Gorges of the Infernaccio

The Gorges of Infernaccio are natural gorges carved by the Tenna river between Mount Priora and Mount Sibilla in the Sibillini Mountains. They belong to the Municipality of Montefortino (FM), in the Monti Sibillini National Park, and are among the most suggestive gorges in the Umbria-Marche Apennines.

It’s a popular destination for excursions and tourist walks, probably one of the most visited in the Sibillini mountains, thanks to its relatively easy access, within everyone’s reach, but at the same time rich in elements of high naturalistic interest, from the wide views of the Tenna valley and the mountains above, to the evocative environments of the valley floor, squeezed between cold, dark rocky gorges or immersed in green beech woods.

In addition to its unspoilt natural beauty, Infernaccio is a place rich in history, culture and spirituality: the hermitage of San Leonardo al Volubrio is the destination of continuous pilgrimages every year, despite the fact that the earthquake of August 2016 damaged its structure. The church, perched on a hill overlooking the gorge, is the last vestige of an atavistic society based on sheep-farming and forestry that has been lost for centuries.
