Trekking on the Lame Rosse is an activity you can do with children in the mountains. They are paths that cross the mountain and you can see areas that have been eroded by time.
These activities can be carried out at any time of the year and are generally very popular with children, who are immersed in a very different environment from the surrounding mountains.
Lame Rosse route: a must in the Marche region
The landscape of the Apennines is very varied and in this area the combination of atmospheric agents and geological structure has played a fundamental role in creating a scenario that is very different from the rest of the Monti Sibillini National Park. Trekking to the Lame Rosse is a fantastic way to admire it.
The route is challenging for the untrained, but well worth it: you descend to the lake and ascend along a path that winds through the folds of the terrain.
Lame Rosse start and finish points
As with many paths in the Sibillini mountains, there is no single starting or finishing point, and we suggest that you follow the route from the most panoramic point, with a terrace overlooking Fiastra lake.
The route is challenging but offers a unique landscape of rocks and ancient trees.
From the panoramic terrace overlooking the Marche region, which can be reached from the car park in the hamlet of Ruffella, in the municipality of Fiastra, we start a short descent of about 1.5 kilometres with a difference in altitude of about 130 metres. From here you cannot miss the view of the lake, an artificial basin created in the fifties (work began in 1955), whose peculiarity lies in the construction of the dam, which is made of a “vault”.
After a few moments of admiring the lake, we set off on our real route: a walk of about 3 km (in addition to the one and a half km already covered) to see the conformation of the famous Lame Rosse.
The route is also suitable for children, but walking shoes are compulsory, walking sticks are recommended and it is absolutely forbidden to touch (crumble, damage, alter) the thousand-year-old gully formations.
What are the ‘Lame Rosse’ in the Sibillini Mountains National Park?
The Lame Rosse are one of the most characteristic and well-known landforms of the Sibillini Mountains. Located about 3 km from Lake Fiastra, they are soil formations (clay and gravel) created over thousands of years as a result of continuous soil erosion.
Weathering has sculpted the terrain into pinnacles and towers which, with their inertia, have resisted rain and wind, creating a ‘small canyon’ of gravel held together by clay and silt formed by weathering.
Barefoot in the Fiastra Lake area
Beyond the aforementioned path, there is a lot of vegetation, there is the Fiastra lake and there are many green areas, all very welcoming and representing a natural spectacle in the Marche region of Italy.
The stunningly varied landscape, where green forests alternate with flowery meadows in fine weather, stretches for more than 10 km. It is also possible to relax and walk barefoot, among water and greenery, where you can regenerate. Here, all year round, we can admire the beauty of nature in peace and quiet, enjoying the silence that reigns here.
Relax after a day’s trekking by taking a dip in the clear waters of the valley below. Or just enjoy the beautiful views.
