An explosion of colour
Every year the plateau of Castelluccio di Norcia is transformed into a stage of bright colours. This natural phenomenon offers an extraordinary spectacle that attracts visitors from all over the world. The abundant flowering is an unmissable event that offers unforgettable impressions to all those who admire it.
Two kinds of flowers or hundreds of species?
Flowering is divided into two main phases: the first is natural and spontaneous, and the second is also natural but linked to cultivated fields. When do the flowers usually appear? Between the end of April and mid-July, but let’s take a closer look!
During the extraordinary flowering of Castelluccio di Norcia we can walk near the areas where the plateaus are transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours. Among the most common flowers that bloom during this period are the cornflower with its light blue petals, the deep red poppy, the golden yellow gentian, the green and white clover, the chicory with its delicate blue flowers, the orange marigold, the white daisy, the delicate violet, the pink dog rose and the purple alfalfa. This explosion of colour makes the landscape unique and fascinating and attracts many visitors every year. Bear in mind, however, that it is unlikely that all the flowers will be in bloom at the same time! Discovery of all the other flowers
Spontaneous flowering comes first
There is its wild and unpredictable nature. Unlike fields of lentils, the spontaneous flowering at the end of April and in May is a fascinating disorder, with a variety of floral species intertwining harmoniously. Every day offers a new vision, with colours and shapes that are constantly changing, making the experience unique and unrepeatable.
Which are the places not to be missed for spontaneous flowering?
One of the most enchanting places to witness this magnificent flowering is the Fosso dei Mergani, south-east of Pian Grande. Here the meadows are transformed into a kaleidoscope of tulips, peonies, gentians and buttercups. Each species contributes to the creation of a living mosaic where the colours dance and alternate in the sunlight, offering the visitor a spectacle of unparalleled natural beauty.
Piangrande flowering dates
The flowering of the Piangrande in Castelluccio is the most important flowering, offering a unique spectacle that attracts visitors from all over the world. This natural event usually takes place between June and July and offers enchanting landscapes. The vast expanses of flowering lentils, with their delicate colours ranging from pink to deep purple, create an extraordinary contrast with the bright green of the meadows.
The question is often asked: are there flowers in the fields too? The answer is NO. Here is an explanation of why there are so many flowers in the lentil fields.
The lentil fields not only have an agricultural function, but also contribute to the collective aesthetic of Castelluccio. When in bloom, the fields become a sea of colour, where the blue of the sky is reflected in the hues of the flowers. The landscape that presents itself to the eye is a symphony of shades that invites contemplation.
An unforgettable experience
