Umbria is a beautiful region, famous for its rolling hills, medieval villages and traditional cuisine. Among the most popular destinations is Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis, with its world-famous basilica. Then there is Perugia, the regional capital, famous for its historic centre and the famous chocolate festival, Eurochocolate. Let’s not forget Orvieto, with its magnificent cathedral, and Spoleto, famous for the Festival of Two Worlds. Umbria also offers many opportunities for nature lovers, such as Lake Trasimeno, the Marmore Falls, Castelluccio di Norcia and, last but not least, the Scarzuola.
Our region is a true jewel!
La Scarzuola is a truly unique and fascinating place located near the village of Montegabbione, in the province of Terni. It was originally a Franciscan monastery founded by St Francis in 1218. What makes La Scarzuola famous, however, is the “ideal city” built by the architect Tomaso Buzzi between the 1950s and 1970s.
Inspired by the drawings of fantastic architecture by artists such as Piranesi and the principles of Renaissance architecture, Buzzi has created a surreal complex of buildings that seem to have come out of a dream. The ideal city includes theatres, temples, monumental staircases and sculptures, each with a symbolic meaning.
Guided tours and visits
Unlike Castelluccio, which also attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors in the summer and, as an open-air site, doesn’t require a guided tour, access to this small village near Terni is restricted.
The number of visitors to La Scarzuola varies from year to year, but it’s usually several thousand people.

When to visit the Scarzuola and how to book
Use the form at the bottom of the page to check availability at Castelluccio di Norcia and book your visit to Scarzuola.
Combine your visit to Castelluccio with a visit to another Umbrian village.
As such a unique and evocative place, it attracts art and architecture lovers and the curious from all over the world. However, such an environment is not a place for the masses and must maintain an intimate and mysterious atmosphere. For this reason, visits are guided and by reservation only, for a more in-depth experience.
