Trekking in the Sibillini Mountains

Castelluccio is an open-air gym. Trekking in the Sibillini Mountains is the sport we recommend to all our guests.

The unique karst formation is a combination of gentle curves and rugged cliffs, making for some fascinating walks and some highly technical climbs.

Sibillini trails to discover

The itineraries and panoramas of the various trekking routes in the Sibillini Mountains are different and varied, making this activity always fascinating. Among the various itineraries there are some that are really well known and famous, such as the climb to Palazzo Borghese, Monte Vettore and the precious Laghi di Pilato. Other itineraries, always fascinating, are a little more complex and suitable for more experienced hikers, such as the walk from Forca di Presta to Forca Viola, or there are simpler routes such as the rings of Monte Veletta or the Colli Alti Bassi.

In any case, our mountains will allow you to enjoy the splendid atmosphere of the Sibillini Mountains.

For those who prefer slow tourism, with walks suitable for the whole family, we recommend the crossing of the Pian Perduto and the numerous itineraries of the Fioritura, magnificent from May to July, when spontaneous flowering alternates with the blossoming of cultivated fields.

Depending on the time of year, every itinerary, every trekking in the Sibillini is different.

Castelluccio di Norcia is one of the stops on many organised and signposted itineraries, and in some cases it is a stop for group walks. We are one of the stages of the GAS, Grande Anello dei Sibillini, about 124 km long, thanks to which you can walk along all the slopes bordering our National Park. We are a stop on the Cammino nelle Terre Mutate, an eco-solidarity initiative set up after the 2016 earthquake, as well as on various trekking tours organised by travel agencies and operators.

Relaxing in the Sibillini Mountains

With its 9 stages, it is possible to cover the whole of the Sibillini Ring, a 124 km route that will allow you to go from one side of the Park to the other and spend a few days immersed in nature, history and tradition.

The routes that wind like a spider’s web through the entire territory of the Monti Sibillini National Park are an infinite source not only for hiking but also for cycling.

Trekking in the Sibillini not only by walking

For a few years now it has been possible to hire mountain bikes to make trekking in the Sibillini Mountains easy, fast and adventurous.

MTB and E-bike in the Monti Sibillini National Park.

The idea of a study of mountain bike trails in the Sibillini Mountains was born in 1996 by the Park and financed by the Marche Region in 1998. The project led to the creation of a system of use in Rings. Discovering this territory by bike means experiencing the changing colours of the seasons, observing the majestic glides of the golden eagle, but also reliving the history of all the villages in the Park and admiring such unique beauties as Lake Fiastra, the Fiastrone Gorge, the Marcite di Norcia and the Piani di Castelluccio.

Starting from Castelluccio and crossing Pian Grande, you climb up to the Norcia pass. From here you reach the Monte Cappelletta ski resort, from where you take the dirt road on the left which, after an initial stretch in the woods, turns right and descends to the small lake at the customs house. The itinerary continues across the valley to Pian Piccolo and Fonte Vetica. From here, turn north and, crossing the plain, take a dirt road that leads to the Pian Grande near Piè Vettore. Continue along the asphalt road to Forca di Presta, pass the foot of the village of Castelluccio and reach Pian Perduto. Before Colle Tamburo, turn left onto the sealed road that takes you back to the starting point (24km).

Maps, guides and itineraries are available for consultation and purchase.

For those who just want to admire the view, without climbing or long walks, on foot or by bike, it is possible to discover the wonders of the Castelluccio plain on horseback by booking an excursion at the Sibillini Ranch, agreeing on the trekking routes and the length of the ride.
