The route
The route is quite challenging, but it is definitely worth the effort.
Starting from the village of Castelluccio di Norcia, head towards Forca Viola. This is the most convenient route for those who want to reach Lake Pilato from Castelluccio with a non-technical itinerary.
Once you have passed Forca Viola, after an initial descent, you remain at altitude and continue along the path that gradually leads into the glacial valley that holds Lake Pilato or, in summer, the two small lakes of Pilato. The route is about 11-12 km long and there are no drinking water sources along the entire route.
This itinerary is a little more demanding than the other routes in the Sibillini Mountains and its peculiarity lies in the fact that it reaches a more isolated area. We recommend that you do it only if you are well trained. The scenery is breathtaking and the tranquillity of the mountains is a real tonic for the spirit.
