We are talking about the Castelluccio stage of the Cammino delle Terre Mutate, a series of stages: an itinerary developed immediately after the 2016 earthquake, an eco-solidarity tourism initiative that starts in Fabriano and arrives in L’Aquila.
Let’s get a better understanding of how the journey unfolds.
Fourteen stages are planned. The route starts in the Norcia area and goes through Visso to Campi di Norcia, then on to the historic centre of Norcia and finally, with a further stage, to Castelluccio di Norcia.
The charm of the Apennine Mountains
The Terre Mutate trail is a hiking route that winds through the mountains of the central Apennines. The route, which is over 250 km long, is characterised by a charming landscape and the typical vegetation of the area. Along the way it is possible to admire some of the most beautiful panoramas of the region and to visit some of the most important historical sites of Umbria.
The Castelluccio stage of the Cammino delle Terre Mutate trail
Starting from the historical centre of Norcia, we head towards the “Case Sparse” area, passing by the holiday farm “La Tana dei Lupi” and the monastery of San Benedetto in Monte. We continue in the direction of an ancient mule track used by shepherds for transhumance.
Once at the top, in the passage between Monte Vetica and Monte Ventosola (at about 1600 metres), you can admire the Piangrande di Castelluccio and continue towards the village in the centre of the Sibillini Mountains. From here the route is almost entirely downhill and it is necessary to stop in the village itself!
All Norcia hiking trails
The trails of Norcia are numerous and are mainly the result of pastoral activities which, over the centuries, have made it possible to optimise the land for grazing and, at the same time, to make it ideal for excursions. The area is located in the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennines, with evocative landscapes and typical vegetation.
