The Pantani of Accumoli

Just a few minutes from Castelluccio are the Pantani of Accumoli, where you can immerse yourself in a path surrounded by greenery, at a crossroads and borders.

These ponds are of glacial origin and are perfect for snowshoeing in winter.

The route to these “little lakes” goes all the way to the town of Accumoli, in the province of Rieti, Lazio, but for simplicity’s sake we suggest you start from Forca Canapine, a town that straddles two regions, Umbria and Marche.

Accumoli’s Pantani Trail: walking through the green between villages

The Pantani of Accumoli is a natural park in the province of Rieti, Lazio. The park is made up of a series of small lakes, known as quagmires, of karst origin, formed over thousands of years by soil erosion. Today the park is an important natural site, home to many different species of flora and fauna, including the howler frog and the euglena sanguinea algae, which colours the ponds red from May to July (depending on the weather). The path through the park allows visitors to admire the beauty of nature between the Monti Sibillini Park and the Monti della Laga and Gran Sasso Park.

Where to find them

This magical place is located in the province of Rieti, in Lazio, but the itinerary we suggest to get there is between Umbria and Marche, with a walk of about 2.5 km on a dirt road.

How to reach the Pantani of Accumoli

The Pantani of Accumoli are about 150 km from Rome and to reach them you have to go to the tourist resort of Forca Canapine, where you can park your car and take a short walk.

There is no public transport in the area, sometimes only summer services.

The route is easy and well worth the effort: the scenery is spectacular.

How does the path unfold?

The route is entirely along a dirt road, with a few small points of interest along the way. You can start with a short visit to Forca Canapine, which is still uninhabited. Continue until you come to the old ski lifts, now closed, and cross small woods and beech groves. The route then heads towards the border with the Papal States.

On foot, by mountain bike or quad bike

The Accumoli Pantani route can be done on foot, by mountain bike or on a quad bike. There are no traffic restrictions, but if you use a motor vehicle, you must always stay on the dirt road.

In any case, it is important to be aware of the ground and trail conditions, especially in winter. There are no refreshment points along the route, so it is necessary to bring a packed lunch.
