Norcia and its historical centre

Norcia is an Italian municipality with a population of 4,567 in the province of Perugia, in Umbria: it is 96 km from the capital of Umbria, at an altitude of about 600 metres, on the northern edge of the Santa Scolastica plateau, a plateau of tectonic origin in the heart of the Umbria-Marche Apennines, and is the easternmost municipality in the Umbria region. Its territory borders on Lazio and Marche.

Norcia is a town with an infinite history. It was already inhabited in Sabine times and was the birthplace of Saint Benedict, who later laid the foundations of the Benedictine Rule.

In the Middle Ages, the city of Norcia, to which the Abbey of Sant’Eutizio belonged, was a leading centre of “surgery”. It was here that the “cerusici” (surgeons) worked in close collaboration with the artisans who processed pork, and it was from this collaboration that the tradition of “Norcineria”, or the application of the rules of surgery to pork, was born.

Today in Norcia it is possible to visit the Natural Park of the Marcite and to plan the access to the building site of the Basilica of St. Benedict, which is being renovated.

On request, there is the possibility of a visit to the farms in Norcia.
